Gandhi Jayanti and International Day of Non-Violence Celebrated in Shanghai

 

1. Consulate General of India, Shanghai celebrated 147th Birth Anniversary of Rashtra Pita Mahatma Gandhi, and International Day of Non-Violence with great pride and joy. To commemorate the Gandhi Jayanti this year, PM Modi inaugurated the Pravasi Bhartiya Kendra (PBK) and dedicated it to Indian Diaspora. The PBK is a premier convention centre for showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Indian Diaspora from different parts of the world. On this occasion, CGI, Shanghai carried out live streaming of the inauguration of PBK at the Consulate premise. A larger number of Indian community members witnessed the inauguration live.

2. Subsequent to the broadcast, Consul General Prakash Gupta, along with the President of Indian Association, Shanghai Shri Raj Khosa garlanded Mahatma Gandhi's Portrait. Delivering a brief memorial lecture, CG Prakash Gupta called upon the audience to imbibe the value of cleanliness in our daily lives, which was one of the key messages of Mahatma Gandhi. He underscored the significance of the PBK as a significant bridge for Indian Diaspora to connect back, and called upon the Indian Community in Eastern China Region to utilize the Kendra to its maximum potential.

3. A film titled 'Gandhi' based on the life of Mahatma Gandhi was screened at the Consulate on the occasion, which was, inter alia, watched by a good number of children who had come to attend the event. Light Indian refreshment was served to the audience during the interval of the film.

4. The Consulate is further going to organize a lecture on “Mahatma Gandhi - Nonviolent Resistance is as Relevant as Ever” by renowned Gandhian scholar, Mrs. Shobhana Radhakrishna, Chief functionary at the Gandhian Forum for Ethical Corporate, at the Center for Gandhian and Indian Studies, Fudan University on 18th October, 2016 to commemorate the anniversary. It should be noted that the Center for Gandhian and Indian Studies was inaugurated by PM Modi during his visit to Shanghai last year.
