"You Don't Belong"Festival

 

The Shanghai leg of “You Don’t Belong: Pasts and Futures of Indian Cinema & India-China Dialogue on Film and Social Thought” Festival was organized by the West Heavens Project (www.westheavens.net) in association with the Consulate General of India, Shanghai. The Festival, held on December 3-11, 2011, consisted of 3 parts. The first part on Film and Social Thought took place in the School of Journalism, Fudan University. The event was inaugurated by the Consul General of India, Shanghai followed by a presentation by Curator Ashish Rajadhyaksha “Ancient Cinemas? A Theory of How Cinema Works within Ancient Civilizations”. Various films like Siddeshwari, You Don’t Belong & No Smoking were screened at this venue on various days.

The second part of the festival, held at Shanghai Film and TV Literature Library, saw the screening of documentaries like ‘Something like a war’, ‘Jahaji Music’ & ‘Partners in Crime’ etc. The documentaries were followed by talk and discussions by the producers like Sanjay Kak, Surabhi Sharma & Paromita Vohra etc.

Short videos were shown during the third part of the festival “Experiments with the Moving Image” at the Minsheng Art Museum. The event began with the videos of Vivan Sundaram after a brief introduction and a lecture by Ashish Rajadhyaksha. Video art of producers like Nikhil Chopra, K.M. Madhusudanan, Vipin Vijay etc. were displayed during the festival.
